Why Choose Tanzania for Your Safari

Few places pack this much variety into one trip. The northern circuit delivers big horizons and efficient logistics; the south trades crowds for river safaris and long, empty views. A large share of the country is conserved through parks and reserves, which helps keep wildlife viewing strong year-round.

  • Home to the world-famous Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebra traverse the Serengeti.
  • Diverse landscapes—from savannahs to volcanic craters—support abundant wildlife year-round.
  • Nearly 30–38% of Tanzania is conserved land, ensuring wildlife thrives.
  • Safari infrastructure balances luxury lodges with unspoiled wilderness.

Where to Go: Tanzania Safari Circuits

Northern Circuit

  • Serengeti National Park

Classic savannah, year-round game; the Great Migration is one of the world’s great natural events.

  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area

An ancient caldera with concentrated wildlife and a chance—never promised—to see black rhino.

  • Tarangire National Park

Elephants among immense baobabs; a quieter, golden-light park that shines in the dry season.

Southern Circuit

  • Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous)

River safaris on the Rufiji, guided walking, and broad, uncrowded wilderness.

  • Ruaha National Park

Vast, wild country with excellent predator viewing and outstanding birding, including many raptors.

Western

  • Mahale Mountains

Chimp tracking on forested slopes above Lake Tanganyika; raw, beautiful, and remote.

  • Katavi

Remote, raw savannah with big herds late in the dry season and dramatic river pools filled with hippos.

Best Time to Visit: Month-by-Month Guide

Seasons shape the experience. Use this quick guide to match your dates with what you want to see—then we’ll fine-tune around local conditions. Exact timing can shift with rainfall patterns. Tell us your dates and we’ll place you in the right area.

January–February: Calving Season

Wildebeest gather in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area to calve, with thousands of newborns and intense predator action.

March: Green & Quiet

Lush landscapes, fewer visitors and some showers – great for photography and slower-paced safaris.

April–May: Long Rains

Main rainy season. Some camps close, but select areas can still be lovely if you don’t mind showers and muddy tracks.

June–October: Dry Season & Prime Game Viewing

Clear skies, short grass and concentrated wildlife around water sources – classic safari conditions across most parks.

July–October: Great Migration River Crossings

In northern Serengeti the herds reach the Mara River; you may witness dramatic crossings. Exact dates shift with the rains.

November–December: Short Rains & Green Landscapes

Short rains refresh the plains, skies are dramatic, birding is excellent and crowds thin out before and after the holidays.

Planning around the seasons is key—share your dates and wish list, and we’ll advise on the best regions for that time.

FAQs

Short, honest answers to the questions we’re asked most. If you don’t see yours here, just ask.

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?
Prices vary depending on when you travel, the style of accommodation you choose, and whether you’re using a private vehicle or joining shared camp activities. Peak-season trips with top-tier lodges naturally cost more; shoulder-season departures and mid-range camps can offer excellent value. We always provide transparent, itemized quotes so you know exactly what’s included—no hidden fees or last-minute surprises.
When is best for the Great Migration?
The dry season (June–October) is generally the most reliable time to catch the Migration as herds move north through the Serengeti. The dramatic Mara River crossings usually happen July–October, though exact timing varies each year with rainfall. If you’re more interested in calving season—thousands of newborn wildebeest and intense predator action—January–February in the southern Serengeti is the most dependable window.
How many days should I plan?
Around 7–10 nights provides the ideal pace: enough time to explore multiple ecosystems without feeling rushed. This lets you balance game drives with downtime at camp. Many travelers add a few days in Zanzibar afterward for a relaxing beach finale and a smooth transition before flying home.
North vs south—what’s right for me?
Northern Circuit: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire—classic landscapes, famous wildlife densities, efficient logistics, and the broadest variety of lodges. Southern Circuit: Selous/Nyerere and Ruaha—more remote, quieter, and with more room to roam. These parks offer superb boat safaris, walking options, and fewer vehicles at sightings. Your choice depends on whether you prefer iconic highlights or a more off-the-beaten-path experience.
Is a Tanzania safari good for families?
Absolutely. Many camps offer family tents, child-friendly guides, shorter drive options, and flexible daily schedules. Breaks for swimming, snacks, and downtime make it enjoyable for kids. With the right pacing, a safari can be both fun and educational for travelers of all ages.
Do I need vaccines or yellow fever proof?
Entry rules can change, but as of now, travelers coming directly from non–yellow-fever-risk countries (such as the U.S. or UK) do not need a yellow fever certificate. If you’re arriving from—or spending more than 12 hours in transit through—a country with yellow-fever risk, you’ll be required to show a valid vaccination certificate. We’ll update you with the latest official guidance as your trip approaches. For personal health protection (e.g., Hepatitis A, Typhoid), check with your healthcare provider, as recommendations vary by traveler.
What are your terms and conditions?
You can review the full details of our booking policies, payment schedules, cancellation rules, and responsibilities here: East African Safari Terms & Conditions. We’ll highlight the key points during the planning process so everything is clear.
What’s the weather like on safari?
Tanzania has two main dry seasons and two green seasons. June–October is cooler and dry, ideal for wildlife viewing. November and April–May bring short and long rains, respectively—lush landscapes, fewer visitors, and excellent photography light. Temperatures vary by altitude: the Serengeti is warm and open, while Ngorongoro can be crisp in the mornings. Layers are your friend.
What should I pack?
A soft-sided duffel, neutral-colored clothing, and lightweight layers cover most needs. Bring a warm jacket for early drives, a hat, sunscreen, comfortable footwear, and any personal medications. Most camps offer complimentary laundry service, so you can pack lighter. Don’t forget a good camera or binoculars—wildlife moments come fast!
